i remember these places

I remember these places,

Of chain link fences
And grassy mounds of yard.

Of busy streets too fast cross
And the small hallway of our bedrooms.

Of old linoleum flooring
And the smell of apple pie.

Of endless rising bread
And neighbor’s cornfields.

Of treeless pastures
And turning onto gravel roads.

Of short-distance family
And never being in need.

Of the simplicity of childhood
And the safety in dependence.

I knew nothing else of the world,
And I loved the world I knew.
