I had the pleasure of seeing Bon Iver this week at my all time favorite venue, The Ryman. I’m usually all about lyrics, but his music has such a strong presence on melody alone that sometimes I realize I have no idea what he’s saying….and I don’t even care.

After the show I was talking with my friends about the songs that really stuck out and after naming 80% of the set list we concluded that it was definitely a good show :)

I know he’s not for everyone, and I always say “To each his own,” but he’s worth giving a listen to if you haven’t yet.

Here’s his single, “Calgary.” Hope you enjoy!

ps- Do you recognize the girl in the video? Ten points to whoever can name her.

tgif: dinner with the girls

There are some things on my summer bucket list that I can’t immediately cross off. Weekly family dinners are just one of those things I’ll have to be on the honor system for.

This week I had some of my girls over to watch So You Think You Can Dance and I cooked up a baked lemon pasta.

I followed this recipe from the mecca of all cooking, The Pioneer Woman. It was the perfect summery blend of lemon with the zest of freshly grated parmesan melting into the pasta. I’m hooked. This little dish has found its place in a regular rotation on my table.

I’ve been wanting to use the mint from my garden for awhile now, but hadn’t figured out what to do with it. So I used them in the simplest form I could, muddling a handful to infuse a blueberry pomegranate tea I mixed together.

I even brought out my fun glasses set from the flea market for the first time!

One friend brought homemade rosemary bread, another tossed a fresh salad and we satisfied our sweet tooth with a fresh fruit pie and homemade whip cream. We ate, we laughed and we watched some brilliant dancing. Here’s my favorite from the night…

Anyone else out there watching So You Think You Can Dance? Who is your favorite?

tgif: Chicago

Chicago!

I’m in town for my roomie’s wedding this week, and even though we’ve got a pretty busy schedule I’m so glad I had one day set aside to go downtown.

I’ve never been to Chicago before so I took the train from the suburbs and met a friend for a day of adventure. It was super cold but we had a great time just wandering around the city. More pics to come!

Hope you all get some adventure in this weekend!

Ps- I LOVE train systems. Nashville needs to get in on this public transportation goodness.

tgif: bring the heat

This week I’m thankful for…

the summer heat.

{Via OhMyLeftOvers}

I’m a warm-weather girl. I crave the heat of the sun and to feel it sink through my skin straight to my bones.

So maybe my hair gets even more frizzy than normal and I develop a slightly constant sweet summer sweat-It makes me feel alive.

Things happen during the summer. The sun stirs our inner child to seek a break from work. We get adventurous. Weekend road trips become a must. Mounds of ice cream are consumed on a regular basis. The days are longer and can fit in more time with friends over dinner. You acquire a new appreciation for the small things like the air conditioning of a movie theatre and the ice from Sonic. And of course…the beach.

For all of you bumming out that summer has come early here in Nashville, I’m sorry, but it makes me a VERY happy girl.

Are you ready for summer?

tgif: bearded music men

Today I want to share some of great musicians that’s been keeping me calm, helping me focus on work and has me humming long after I’ve turned off the speakers. And they both just happen to have some fabulous facial hair.

William Fitzsimmons

{Via Paste Magazine}

This man melts me heart. While his songs are mostly tragic stories, the melodies and his comforting voice make you believe you’re listening to lullabies. His latest album, Gold in the Shadows, has a more positive tone but hasn’t strayed a bit from Fitzsimmons’ beautiful storytelling abilities.

With nothing but a guitar in an empty room, he still has a captivating presence. Here’s a video of him singing “Beautiful Girl.”

Bon Iver

{Via Paste Magazine}

I mean really. This guy. Who doesn’t love this guy? Justin Vernon is quirky, talented and has an AmAzIng falsetto. I’ve had a sneak peak at his upcoming album, Bon Iver, and I can’t stop listening! And I’m beyond excited to see him at the Ryman in July.

He was on Jimmy Fallon this week and covered one of my all time favorite songs, Bonnie Raitt’s “I Can’t Make You Love Me.”

What have you been listening to?

TGIF: Culinary Adventures

I’m trying to get out of my cooking rut. I used to be better about trying new recipes at least once a week, but the last couple of months have been a bit void of much newness in the kitchen.

So, I made myself a promise to try something different this week. I looked through all the recipes I’ve pinned on Pinterest¬†and decided on two simple dishes.

Roasted Tomatoes with Shrimp & Feta

{Via Real Simple}

This first one came off Real Simple- always a favorite. I’m a big fan of roasted tomatoes so that was kind of what drew me in. Peeling and deveining shrimp is zero fun and your house may smell like the docks for a night, but it’s all worth it in the end.

Lemon, Mustard & Avocado Potato Salad

{Via Two Spoons}

With most foods, you have a general idea of what you’re about to put in your mouth. However, I had no idea how this one was going to taste. Honestly, I just liked the picture enough to give it a go. And I’m glad I did. This will definitely be a repeat in my house from now on.

Have you tried any new recipes recently?

TGIF: Flea Market & Dashboard Confessional

I’m not going to lie. I’ve had a bit of a downer mood week. But in the midst of the ick, there are still fun things to be thankful for. So here’s to the sun coming out this weekend and lifting ALL our moods.

Today I’m thankful for…

Flea market finds

Y’all know I love the flea market and this past weekend just continued to solidify it’s place in my heart.

First off, my roommate and I got not 1 but 2 8mm projectors for $8! How can you pass that up? We even bought a couple old school cartoon reels to watch on them.

We cleaned them out and got them working, but sadly something is still a bit off and the film is burning. But I’m set on getting this in working order.

I also found a little glasses carrier. I’ve been wanting one of these for along time, but haven’t been impressed with the selection the past few months. But, oh man, I love this find.

The detail on these glasses is my favorite part.

I even went for round 2 at the flea market this weekend and found a great tea infuser. The one I have right now is small and for 1 cup, but I can put this one right into my tea pot for multiple cups at once.

Dashboard Confessional

It’s been amazing how all the shows we’ve seen recently have been our old school favorites. So far this year we’ve seen Rooney and Jimmy Eat World and last night it was the magnificent Chris Carrabba of Dashboard Confessional. It’s the 10 year anniversary of Swiss Army Romance and he played every song on the album plus some.

It’s a bit blurry, but I promise you it’s Chris

Now, I’m normally a bit annoyed by people who yell-sing through an entire show, but there was a guy standing next to us that was hilarious. Watching him video himself singing, not really knowing the words and singing so hard he had to keep his eyes closed really made the show even better for us.

I knew I couldn’t get a good video of Chris, but I had to try and capture some of our friend’s priceless vocals. Enjoy…
