on my own

If it wasn’t for you,
My feet would never touch the floor.

Wrapped in sheets and lost in dreams,
Isolated and desolate.

Unaware of the battle and ignorant by fault,
Haunted and hunted.

Wandering without light and building in the sand,
Broken and defeated.

Hear this thankful heart.

and stay

How do you see through my skin?
The patterns of my heart,
The rhythms of my thought,
And every way I tick.

How do you see it all and stay?
Joined in the trenches,
Covered in filth,
And unready to come clean.

turning off

The end of the long day finally comes.
Hours in the sun.
Hours on your feet.

Each second an hour as you drive.
Falling out of your car.
Falling onto bed.

Rolling on to your side.
Closing shut your eyes.
Closing down your mind.

the right choice

You stay there,
And I’ll stay here.

Just in case.
Not an inch closer.

Stay in your corner,
And I’ll keep by the door,
Hand ready to twist the knob.

Or maybe I should just leave the room.

still here

Don’t leave me until you’ve done what you promised.

Opened my eyes and reclaimed ground.

I won’t leave.
I can’t leave.

My back is broken.
I’m wrestled to the ground.

No choice but to keep waiting.

not my own

Slowly, slowly
Breaking down.

Sleep unslept.
Work unworked.
Life unlived.

Wasting words and purpose in the waiting.
Waiting for what can’t be given.

pick it up

Before today you walked.
A safe transportation,
Good for the knees,
And slow to watch the steps.

The steady pace kept you from falling.
Wise to your present.
Poor to your future.

But today you run.
The natural rhythm of your body.
Legs sprinting,
Heart beating.
