the right choice

You stay there,
And I’ll stay here.

Just in case.
Not an inch closer.

Stay in your corner,
And I’ll keep by the door,
Hand ready to twist the knob.

Or maybe I should just leave the room.

still here

Don’t leave me until you’ve done what you promised.

Opened my eyes and reclaimed ground.

I won’t leave.
I can’t leave.

My back is broken.
I’m wrestled to the ground.

No choice but to keep waiting.

not my own

Slowly, slowly
Breaking down.

Sleep unslept.
Work unworked.
Life unlived.

Wasting words and purpose in the waiting.
Waiting for what can’t be given.

pick it up

Before today you walked.
A safe transportation,
Good for the knees,
And slow to watch the steps.

The steady pace kept you from falling.
Wise to your present.
Poor to your future.

But today you run.
The natural rhythm of your body.
Legs sprinting,
Heart beating.

now is the time

Time to come clean
Out of hiding
Out of the dark

Time to be a man
To acknowledge
To take on

Time to speak truth
Giving life
Giving forgiveness

Time to be love
Taking care of each other
Taking hand in hand

Time to rise up
For the young
For the dreamer

i remember these places

I remember these places,

Of chain link fences
And grassy mounds of yard.

Of busy streets too fast cross
And the small hallway of our bedrooms.

Of old linoleum flooring
And the smell of apple pie.

Of endless rising bread
And neighbor’s cornfields.

Of treeless pastures
And turning onto gravel roads.

Of short-distance family
And never being in need.

Of the simplicity of childhood
And the safety in dependence.

I knew nothing else of the world,
And I loved the world I knew.

keep stepping

There’s another world,
Where limits don’t mean ends,
But permission to push.

A place of magic.
A disappearing act of inhibitions,
Above shaking nerves.

Another level of daring.
A confidence,
A fearlessness,
A courage beyond common stretch.

A promised land to search for,
But never to settle in.

every day

Don’t look.
I’m failing.
Not hitting my marks and missing my queues.

Frantic after scribbled pages flying quick and crinkled in the wind.
Limp from keeping pace with the advanced and practiced.
Bruised and stumbling in the bit of light leading the way.

One thing after another,
Falling like a domino,
Until I stand empty handed.

Nothing of my own work to stand with me.

Free again to start new.

how to kill a dream

Keep your dreams somewhere safe,
Hidden lock and key,
Away from possibilities and accountabilities.

Sweep them under couches and beds,
Shoved behind lost shoes,
To be covered in dust.

Put them in corners,
Faced away from the moving world.
The light of their face pushed against the wall.

Bury them deep inside you.
Forever between your heart and tongue,
Stuck in your throat.

Beneath the fear.
Beneath the unknown.
Alone and unheard.

for you

Wait with me for a moment.
Just a few short minutes in the rush of today.

I chose my dress for this heat.
And my shoes for this walk.
I put my hair up just for you.

Be here with me in the middle,
A few minutes to turn from ambition into the ease of each other.

And as you continue your day,
Remember,
I’m all for you.
