tgif: dinner with the girls

There are some things on my summer bucket list that I can’t immediately cross off. Weekly family dinners are just one of those things I’ll have to be on the honor system for.

This week I had some of my girls over to watch So You Think You Can Dance and I cooked up a baked lemon pasta.

I followed this recipe from the mecca of all cooking, The Pioneer Woman. It was the perfect summery blend of lemon with the zest of freshly grated parmesan melting into the pasta. I’m hooked. This little dish has found its place in a regular rotation on my table.

I’ve been wanting to use the mint from my garden for awhile now, but hadn’t figured out what to do with it. So I used them in the simplest form I could, muddling a handful to infuse a blueberry pomegranate tea I mixed together.

I even brought out my fun glasses set from the flea market for the first time!

One friend brought homemade rosemary bread, another tossed a fresh salad and we satisfied our sweet tooth with a fresh fruit pie and homemade whip cream. We ate, we laughed and we watched some brilliant dancing. Here’s my favorite from the night…

Anyone else out there watching So You Think You Can Dance? Who is your favorite?

diy kitchen island part 1

Last month at the flea market I picked up an old dresser with every intention of turning it into a little kitchen island.

It was a sweet steal at $30.

But it’s been sitting in my sun room for a month now…completely untouched.

That’s all about to change.

I’ve got a few ideas involving chalkboard paint, a cutting board, wire racks and a LOT of sanding.

If you where taking this on, what fun add ons would you be thinking about?

TGIF: Flea Market & Dashboard Confessional

I’m not going to lie. I’ve had a bit of a downer mood week. But in the midst of the ick, there are still fun things to be thankful for. So here’s to the sun coming out this weekend and lifting ALL our moods.

Today I’m thankful for…

Flea market finds

Y’all know I love the flea market and this past weekend just continued to solidify it’s place in my heart.

First off, my roommate and I got not 1 but 2 8mm projectors for $8! How can you pass that up? We even bought a couple old school cartoon reels to watch on them.

We cleaned them out and got them working, but sadly something is still a bit off and the film is burning. But I’m set on getting this in working order.

I also found a little glasses carrier. I’ve been wanting one of these for along time, but haven’t been impressed with the selection the past few months. But, oh man, I love this find.

The detail on these glasses is my favorite part.

I even went for round 2 at the flea market this weekend and found a great tea infuser. The one I have right now is small and for 1 cup, but I can put this one right into my tea pot for multiple cups at once.

Dashboard Confessional

It’s been amazing how all the shows we’ve seen recently have been our old school favorites. So far this year we’ve seen Rooney and Jimmy Eat World and last night it was the magnificent Chris Carrabba of Dashboard Confessional. It’s the 10 year anniversary of Swiss Army Romance and he played every song on the album plus some.

It’s a bit blurry, but I promise you it’s Chris

Now, I’m normally a bit annoyed by people who yell-sing through an entire show, but there was a guy standing next to us that was hilarious. Watching him video himself singing, not really knowing the words and singing so hard he had to keep his eyes closed really made the show even better for us.

I knew I couldn’t get a good video of Chris, but I had to try and capture some of our friend’s priceless vocals. Enjoy…

DIY: Tea Shelf

I don’t know about you, but my love for a hot cuppa knows no ends. Tea became a staple in our house a couple winters ago to combat the drafty old house we lived in. We’d heat up a pot of water and enjoy whatever Celestial Seasonings had to offer us that night.

Awhile ago, I saw a great DIY project on Design*Sponge to make a tea shelf.

{Via Design*Sponge}
I headed to the flea market without really having a defined idea of what I wanted. I just knew I’d come up with some variation of this. As luck would have it, the first booth we stopped at had the perfect piece of furniture…and it was only $5!

Yes, it was a little worn, but isn’t that the beauty in it? I painted the whole shelf a dark purple and found new drawer knobs at the flea market. It was now a new creature. I even screwed in some mason jars underneath to complete my tea shelf.

It’s now hanging in our kitchen waiting to be filled with delicious teas.

Do you like tea? What are your favorites?

DIY: Lighted Lampshade Frame

Remember when I showed all my fab flea market finds a couple weeks ago? Well, one of my purchases was this seriously awesome lampshade frame.

I had quite a few ideas of what to do with this beauty, but landed on something that I’m quite pleased with.

One of my most favorite things about Christmas is Christmas lights. I love sitting in a dark living room with only the Christmas tree lit. Just thinking about it makes me feel warm and cozy. So, I thought to myself, “Why not have those warm fuzzies all year round?”

I called a couple places around town, but to my horror, all the Christmas lights were off the shelf. I’m not going to lie… I was really sad. I thought I would have to put this project on the back burner for an indefinite amount of time. However, my parents came to the rescue. I called my mom to see if they had boxed up and stored their Christmas lights and found out their outside lights were actually still on the front yard bushes! If you know my family…that’s crazy talk. My parents take down Christmas on Dec.26. Lucky for me they’ve been really busy this year. :)

My dad brought up a few strings of lights to Nashville and I got to work. It actually took a lot longer than I thought it would just to wrap lights around a frame, but after two attempts (the 1st was a failure because I realized that one string of lights was out a little too late) it was ready to hang.

I got our ladder all set up, climbed to the top wrung and hung this beauty from the ceiling in the corner of our living room.

You can now find me almost any night of the week reading by the soft glow of my new year-around Christmas lights.

TGIF: Breaking the Winter Doldrums

Today I’m thankful for…

Family dinners.

I was feeling a bit ho-hum this week so I decided to smack it out with one of my favorite things- family dinners. I love cooking for my friends, so I made a veggie lasagna and had some people over. We set up my new flea market table (check it below!) in the living room and enjoyed a lovely time together. And then we watched Newsies :) Seize the day, my friends…Seize the day.

Fabulous flea market finds.

It may have been freezing last weekend, but my roommie and I HAVE to hit the flea market every month. And I found exactly what I wanted…even if I didn’t really know it at the time :)

I got this incredible table for $30! I’m still not sure if I’m going to paint it or leave it red.

Found these perfect knobs for my tea shelf- I’ll be showing you as soon as I get it hung up on the wall.

Finally, I found this lamp shade skeleton. One corner in our living room is super bare, so I’ve been dreaming up some ways to spice it up. This lamp shade is going to work perfectly. Again, I’ll be sharing that as soon as I get it all up.

Have a great weekend!!!
